We all know summer is for pool days, playing outside, and a break from school. But, we also want to avoid the summer slump.
Reading is to the brain as exercising is to muscles. If we don’t read, we lose literacy skills. Children who don't read or engage in any kind of mental activity can lose one third of what they learned during the year at school.
Here are some ways to encourage reading and to make it fun!
- Are you going on a trip? Encourage your child to pick a book that takes place in your destination?
- Let them choose a special place as their "reading nook/corner" for the summer.
- Let your child read what interests them! Manga? Great! Diary of a Wimpy Kid? Fantastic! War and Peace? It's not my cup of tea, but go for it!
- Set goals with your child. Whether it's to read for five hours a week or just 15 minutes a day, giving your child a goal can help create a sense of achievement.
What will your family be reading this summer?
