Many students (and adults) dread anything involving crunching numbers. Math is a challenging subject because there is almost always one right answer and infinite ways to come to an incorrect answer.
One reason that math can seem intimidating is that it can feel like an abstract concept. Here at SISD, we like to emphasise how math is in everything we do! To promote concrete mathematical thinking over winter break, here are some ways to bring maths into your everyday lives:
- Are you travelling over the break? If you know how far you are going and how long it will take you, calculate with your children how fast you will travel per hour...or even minute!
- Are you cooking up something delicious? Explore how to multiply fractions or decimals if you need to make your recipe bigger!
- Are you going somewhere with snow? Discuss the lines of symmetry in a snowflake! PS: Even if you're not going somewhere with snow, you can explore this fun activity from anywhere.
Math can be intimidating - but it doesn't have to be! Try some of these activities to make math fun for everyone.
