First Term Success

The first term back to school can set the tone for the whole year. Starting off on the right foot can pave the way for success. Help your child set and follow routines. If they know all the steps needed to get ready in the morning, the day will start much smoother. Model how to plan for the future. This is a learned skill that many students will need support to develop. Showing students how to take a large assignment or test and break it down can help them succeed. Set small goals and celebrate with your child when he or she reaches them. Small goals like remembering all school materials or reading for 10 minutes a day can help students learn to how to create goals and self-reflect. Learning to make goals is an important, life-long skill - start early so later years are fruitful.

Unmasking: A Mix of Emotions

While we are delighted to see so many smiling faces at school now that we are no longer required to wear masks, many students may feel anxiety over suddenly not wearing masks.  Sudden change can be hard for any student. Especially when they might feel like masks keep them safe. Any feelings of nervousness are completely normal. Here are some ways to talk with your children about how they feel to not wear a mask: Have open conversations as a family.  Anticipate difficult scenarios - going to a crowded mall or movie theater without masks may feel odd for many children. Discuss this in advance to see what may help alleviate any feelings of anxiety. Remind your children that some people may still wear masks for personal reasons.

Wellbeing Tip!

Doing homework. Getting to gymnastics/football/music practice. Packing lunches. Finding time to connect as a family... The beginning of the year can be a stressful time for everyone. Creating a routine allows your children to know what to expect and can reduce rushing and anxiety. Here are some top tips for creating a routine: Create small goals - the whole day doesn't have to be a routine. Start with an after school routine and build from there.  Make it fun! Incorporate music or games into your routine. Celebrate when your routine goes well!
